Soilent Green: Inevitable collpase in the presence of conviction

02/05/08  ||  Euthanatos

That’s one long album title. Reminds me of that circus metal band, Bal Sagoth. Musically, though, the two bands couldn’t be more different. Soilent Green is usually called death sludge, truth is, they mix a lot of different styles and hailing from Louisiana, naturally there’s a slow, sludge like feel to their doomy metal, especially since the band has in its ranks band members from Crowbar and Eyehategod. That’s a good thing, I always say, when a band doesn’t quite fit a niche, making a sound of their own. So, regardless of liking the band or not, Soilent Green certainly are original and walking their own path.

This new album, with the ridiculously long title which I’m not going to repeat over and over (yes, I am aware of copy and paste, but I’m too lazy even for that), is pretty interesting. As I said, the band blends a lot of different elements, and while yes, I can hear some death metal here, doom metal would be much more appropriate. There’s a craziness about their song structures that remind me of insane people like Meshuggah and Mastodon. The difference being that Soilent Green isn’t quite as appealing in terms of catchy riffs or memorable hooks, but they do keep your attention with brutality and some groovy instrumental.

Another good thing is that although they play a style that’s easy to drag on, their songs aren’t really all that long, usually clocking in at the 4 minute mark. This way, the bands seems to take you on this ethereal journey of intrinsic elements, but it doesn’t tire you or seem endless. The aggressive vocals of Goatwhore’s Ben Falgoust should manage to keep you awake in case you get bored, though.

Fortunately as well, the band doesn’t get too comfortable with itself and dares to speed things up in tracks like “Antioxidant”, just to keep you on your toes. Something I wish they’d do more often, however, is use acoustic parts, as the initial moments to songs like “Lovesick” and “In The Same Breath” sound very good, so some more of that would be pleasing.

While not something that would please every headbanger out there, it’s certainly a band to be known by followers of more different acts that aren’t afraid to experiment with their music. And the irony of it all is that this is as metal as it gets, just to prove that you can be experimental and not a fucktard.

Me likey.

The cover: It’s this flying futuristic woman. Seriously, what the fucking fuck is up with that.

7 Charlton Heston movies out of 10.
